My Relationship with Technology - Final Media Law & Literacy Blog Post

My relationship with technology is different from many of my friends. My relationship with technology seems to be healthy in terms of my mental health but not in terms of how long I am on it for. I have never felt the urge to delete social media over what I may see someone or something post. However, I have had friends who have different social media apps deleted for numerous reasons.

People post on social media all the time, resulting in many mixed emotions. Most people never find any concerns with what people post on social media. However, one post could change everything. Someone may not like that a friend posted a picture with a former friend and so the person looking at the most's mental health may be a little "shaky" at that moment.

I do think I spend too much time on different social media apps like Instagram, Snapchat, and TikTok every day. My screen time has gone down over a short period of time recently, but I still find it to be too much.

When my parents were my age, they were not on social media. They did not have smartphones like everyone does now. They were able to get outside more. They were not addicted to their phones.

My five and a half hours of screentime last week is not nearly as much as it used to be, but I believe a truly healthy relationship with technology is even less than mine.

YouTube may be the healthiest social media platform that I use compared to the other ones. Videos on the app/website can range from anything someone can think about. Therefore one can somewhat censor what they want to see on the video platform. The only aspect of YouTube that would contradict this would be the recommended page. However, if one watches enough, the recommended page will adjust to what the platform thinks you want to watch yourself.

I think technology does make me smarter because I can read an unlimited amount of articles on Google and the internet. If we were stuck to just newspapers, than I still would be smart but I would not be as up-to-date with current events around the world as I am now. Technology can be misleading due to how many articles and different types of information are posted online. I could read one article on a topic, then read another one and it contains completely different information.

I worry about misinformation because I do not want to go up to someone and speak confidently on a subject and it all be completely false just based on one article I read. People can post an article online with completely false information just to receive clicks and views. I do think, however, people have accepted this and it is a normal thing to expect at this point in society.

My online footprint is seen on all different kinds of social media apps like Instagram and Snapchat. I have had many conversations with people over these platforms and I believe everything that I have posted will not hurt me in the future when it comes to my professional career. If someone were to look me up online they would just find my social media accounts and some of the work I have done through podcasts and written articles.

I think I have a healthy relationship with technology, despite being on electronics a lot. I think technology does overtake some people and cause mental health problems, but despite this, I think it is just an "accepted part of society" at this point in time.

Diffusion Theory and the Rise of Technology has Changed the World

Diffusion Theory is how and why certain technologies gain traction and become popular. When I think of this I do not focus on the item itself (like a phone), but on what can happen inside of them. What happens behind the scenes can be positive or negative depending on what actions are taken.

As someone who wants to be in the social media world in my professional career, I have taken notice of certain companies' algorithms. These algorithms are not a set of rules but are different ways people can gain traction with each company.

From YouTube and Twitch to Instagram and news outlets, every company has obligations that need to be followed in order for everything to run smoothly. To succeed on YouTube, different strategies will be needed to gain attention.

According to Tubebuddy, YouTube cares more about watch time than the certain number of views a video receives. YouTube does not want a singular "click" of someone choosing to watch a video but wants people to stay on the website as long as possible. One rule that YouTube is cutting down on as of late is the use of cursing. If one may curse during the first two minutes of a video it will likely be demonetized, and will not receive any compensation.

Websites like Rumble notice the harsh rules YouTube and Twitch put on their content creators and take this to their own advantage by allowing free speech. These websites have been gaining traction as of late resulting in many big names of content creators like SteveWillDoIt and Adin Ross. They get big named creators to join their platform as a way to gain more media attention and grow the brand.

Kick signed Ross to a multi-million dollar streaming deal. So, while YouTube and Twitch may have more money at their disposal, these free-speech websites are not afraid to sign big names, despite the controversy, to bring attention to their company.

Adin Ross is a prime example as to the issues of online censoring and companies following diffusion theory. The streamer had strikes on his Twitch channel that would not be considered a fault on Kick. What Ross was accused of is by far not as worse as some other streamers who are still allowed to make content on said platforms. Ross is still allowed to make content on YouTube but he only posts portions of his stream on the video site. Live-streaming is his main source of income.

Different companies have ways that they want their organization to be run with all kinds of rules. However, these rules can then contradict themselves causing issues. On Twitch, it has been brought to light, that if a woman does something against the guidelines and a male streamer does the same thing, the female streamer receives a lesser punishment.

Diffusion Theory can benefit companies with more lenient rules but also hurts ones that are considered mainstream. This theory can be thought about in different ways by multiple people but when I think about it, online media always comes to mind.

The NFL Draft, A Holiday for Sports Fans

The NFL Draft, A Holiday for Sports Fans

The 2023 NFL Draft is one of the biggest events during the calendar year for football fans.

By Jonah Alewine

Q News

The draft always occurs in the early spring and is the best day of athletes' lives as their dreams are officially a reality. The NFL draft is not just a big day for the prospects involved but also for the fans.

The Future is Bright for the Quarterback Class

The quarterback position is the most important on the field and last year the league saw only one selected in the first two rounds of the 2022 NFL Draft. That quarterback is former Pittsburgh Panther Kenny Pickett, who was drafted by the Pittsburgh Steelers.

This year is completely different. Four quarterbacks are projected to go within the first 10 picks of the first round while five could possibly go on the first night.

Alabama quarterback Bryce Young and Ohio State signal caller C.J. Stroud are the two prototypical top quarterbacks that normally come out of the draft each year. However, Florida’s Anthony Richardson may have the most potential out of the position that anyone has ever seen.

Kentucky quarterback Will Levis also has a lot of potential, but his play in college has not been as appealing as Richardson’s according to many experts. Young, Stroud, Richardson, and Levis are all projected to go within the first 10 selections. Tennessee's Hendon Hooker is that fifth quarterback that could end up going Thursday night.

The potential is out of this world for the quarterbacks projected to go high in the draft, but in the later rounds, some signal-callers may still get a chance. UCLA's Dorian Thompson-Robinson, Houston's Clayton Tune, and TCU's Max Duggan are all projected to go late day two or during the third and final day of the draft. However, all three quarterbacks could be given a chance at the next level depending on the team or situation they are drafted to.

The Rest of the Draft Class has a Mix of Talent

The NFL draft consists of seven rounds with the first three rounds being designed to be future starters for teams and the final four rounds being made to have depth at positions in case of injury. However, every year multiple day-three picks end up becoming stars of the game. NFL Draft superfan and Arizona State student Nick Baer believes the position for teams to find depth is at tight end (TE).

Baer stated “In previous years you would not have more than one guy seriously considered as a round one tight end but this year we have multiple TEs in Dalton Kincaid and Michael Mayer being likely 1st round guys. In previous years, a player like Oregon State’s Luke Musgrave is probably a late first rounder but because of Kincaid and Mayer, he’s likely a day two TE.”

Baer finds that due to Kincaid and Mayer being likely first-round picks, it pushes other prospects down into other rounds like Musgrave and Darnell Washington. Although I do agree with Baer that the tight end position is one of the deepest, I think the one with the most depth is at cornerback.

The Cornerback Position has Potential

Besides the top five guys like Devon Witherspoon and Joey Porter Jr., players like Clark Phillips and D.J. Turner have an immense amount of potential at the cornerback position. Players who are projected to go late in the third round or during the third day of the draft, I think can end up being starters at the professional level given the right coaching and development.

Many fans of the game also find ways to incorporate their thoughts and predictions into the draft’s prospects. Many companies and individual people create lists ranking these players better known as Big Boards.

Another way fans of the draft incorporate their thoughts is through Mock Drafts. These “test drafts” are ways for people to predict which prospects go to each of the 32   NFL franchises.

All of the top NFL Draft analysts like Mel Kiper Jr. and Daniel Jeremiah conduct these mock drafts and publish them online. Kiper Jr. and Jeremiah complete mock drafts just like the fans do, but in doing so, they give their thoughts and in-depth analysis behind each prediction.

Many fans of the NFL draft continue to make mock drafts on a daily basis as a way to contribute their own thoughts and predictions as to what could actually happen on draft night.

The Fan Experience is like None-Other

Besides the actual picks themselves, NFL Draft weekend brings fans of all teams together for draft parties and festivities. Fans announce their favorite team's picks every year, but none of them have experienced the reception Sam Prince did in 2022.

Prince was one of the biggest stories of the 2022 NFL Draft and he only announced one pick. Prince was able to make the 5th overall pick in last year’s draft and started going viral on social media. Prince received a heart transplant 10 years previous, and through the Make a Wish Foundation, he chose to announce the Giant’s first-round pick.

When asked what announcing the pick meant to him, Prince stated, "It meant the world to me announcing the pick. My mom always said to me that’s always light at the end of the tunnel, that night I saw the light at the end of the tunnel." Prince's wish came true and the response afterward was nothing that he expected.

"NFL draft weekend was the best weekend of my life. When I was on TV I was taking every moment in." Prince has been taken under sportscaster Rich Eisen's wing after the draft as well as appearing on numerous NFL and sports-based shows.

He has appeared on Good Morning Football, NFL Draft Draft Day Coverage, and NFL Game Day, amongst many other shows.

"The response towards me after I made the pick has been nothing but amazing! I cannot stop thinking about how grateful I am for everything in my life. I am forever thankful for my donor family’s selfless act for donating their child’s organs."

Since the 2022 NFL Draft, Prince has been documented on SportsCenter and NFL Network. The current college freshman is an inspiration to many and deserves all of the recognition he has received.

5 Red Flags You're Dealing With 'Situational' Depression

Jonah Alewine

3/22/23

Q News

Depression is a feeling that anyone at any time can experience on a daily basis. However, the way someone feels depressed can be completely situational from another person.

Depression is not a one-size-fits-all experience. For many, it persists for a long time or feels as though it’s constantly recurring. For others, it may only arise under specific circumstances and for a short duration. This latter condition is what many call “situational depression.”

Situational Depression Is Absorbing the Human Population

“Situational depression is a depressive experience that is triggered by a traumatic event or a change in a person’s life, such as job loss, the death of a loved one, or an unstable work environment,” said Greg Kushnick, a licensed psychologist in New York. “It is usually considered to be a normal reaction to a major life change or trauma.”

He noted that a depressive reaction to the COVID-19 pandemic can be labeled “situational,” depending on the severity of symptoms, when they started, and how long they persist.

As with other depression-related experiences, situational depression tends to involve a low mood and feelings of sadness, guilt, or hopelessness. You may have more difficulty feeling pleasure or joy than usual, as well.

The term “situational depression” is more of an informal descriptor for what is often categorized as a type of “adjustment disorder.”

“When people think of situational depression, they are often thinking of adjustment disorders,” said Steven Bartek, clinical instructor of psychiatry at Michigan Medicine. “An adjustment disorder is a reaction to a stressor that is more intense than a typical emotional response, but not as severe as a full depressive episode.”

“I hear people use the phrase ‘situational depression’ quite a bit, and I honestly have mixed feelings about it,” he added. “It captures something valuable for many people, in that it seems to provide an explanation for the sadness they are experiencing.

That can also be a risk, though, since people often minimize the severity of their depression when they think of it as just a reaction to a situation.”

“The first step is recognizing that there has been a change in your mental health, Kushnick said. “If you’re unsure, consider asking someone who knows you well as to whether he or she has witnessed any changes in your mood.” (Or, if you’re worried about a loved one experiencing this issue, make note of the changes in their mood.)

Bartek emphasized that it’s perfectly normal and understandable to experience low moods, especially amid the challenges of 2020.

“People sometimes feel pressure to ignore negative emotions ― particularly in a world of perfect Instagram photos ― but during a year with a worldwide pandemic, economic uncertainty, a nationwide referendum on racial violence, and families divided along political lines, experiencing strong and sometimes negative emotions is normal and does not need to be a source of shame,” he said.

In addition to mood shifts, various behavioral changes are also associated with situational depression. These include changes in appetite and eating habits, poor or excessive sleep, bouts of crying, social isolation, losing your temper, rumination, loss of energy and more.

The Signs of a Mental Health Swing

One day someone can be happy-go-lucky, but the next could be a completely different story. That same person’s life can be completely flipped upside down.

Wondering whether your experience with depression is “situational” rather than something more long-term? Below, experts share some insights on the matter.

“People may engage in binge eating or reckless behavior, or ‘acting out’ ― impulsive or self-injurious behavior with substances, sexuality, etc.,” said Sue Varma, a clinical assistant professor of psychiatry at NYU Langone Medical Center

“It becomes concerning when someone’s making poor decisions ― or has thoughts or behaviors of self-harm. This warrants immediate professional help.”

“Usually you will see emotional or behavioral symptoms within three months of a specific stressor occurring in your life,” Varma said.

Basically, you’re having an emotional response to a traumatic event or life change, and the extent of the reaction will exceed what is expected in response to that stressor. What constitutes an “expected” response can vary, depending on your culture, baseline mood and behavior.

In more extreme circumstances like the trauma of the COVID-19 pandemic, your baseline may shift, as everyone is expected to experience some mood and behavioral changes in this time.

But it’s important to continue monitoring your psychological response and how it affects your day-to-day life. With situational depression, your symptoms can be severe enough to impair your daily functioning. You may have low motivation and difficulty concentrating.

“People usually experience low mood or anxiety that is intense enough to impact their functioning, such as not being able to focus at work or neglecting relationships,” Bartek said, adding that you shouldn’t allow the “situational” moniker to prevent you from seeking treatment when you need it.

The Long-Term Effects of Situational Depression

Finally, the main item that sets situational depression from something more long-term is how long you’re experiencing the issue. “Situational depression has a shorter duration than other forms of depression. Situational depression ends when the event ends, the person recovers or with the passage of time,” Kushnick said, adding that therapy can help reduce the severity and length of the symptoms.

Bartek noted that these symptoms tend to go away about six months after the stressor ends. Although disorders like situational depression usually don’t require medication for treatment, they can be serious and are associated with an increased risk of suicide.

And if the situation triggering the symptoms is severe trauma, you also may experience other symptoms, such as nightmares, flashbacks, or other problems associated with post-traumatic stress disorder.

Talking to a professional can help determine the best course of action for your particular circumstances. “The best ways to resolve an adjustment disorder are to stop the stressor (if possible) and to engage in therapy,” Bartek said.

“Throughout this year, the stress, uncertainty, and isolation that has come from the COVID pandemic have led to many people feeling symptoms of depression that are new to them,” he added.

“If these symptoms are persistent and do not go away as they normally would, if they are impairing someone’s ability to function, and especially if someone develops thoughts of suicide, treatment should be sought. There are good, evidence-based treatments that can bring relief, even while this stressful situation persists.”
